Return of democracy in Kashmir

Sarpanchs and Panchs have shown great zeal & enthusiasm resulting in massive turn out of Pole percentage i.e. 1996 throughout the State for casting vote to elect four MLCs from Panchayat quota is a significant event in the J&K history.

The representatives of the people despite of threat call from across the border to openly defy the diktat of the militant organization especially the Jihad council. Overall voting in the Jammu & Kashmir State has been above 97% while in Srinagar district it touched 100%. Voting in militancy ridden districts i.e. Baramulla, Sopore & Shopian crossed plus 80%. It is a matter of debate that why do the militant organizations and their leadership in and outside the State so vehemently oppose panchayat elections and why do they want to wage violence against elected sarpanchs & panchs?

The coalition government has rightly deserved praise for holding such election successfully after a gap of over forty years under the leadership of Omar Abdullah. There were every apprehensions and false rumours from critics and adversaries to discredit Governments venture but all of them proved wrong. Unfortunately during the past decade due to militancy and false propaganda of Separatists, our political leadership has abandoned the concept of democratic dispensation and its futuristic vision. The present coalition Government took certain initiatives of practically developing power to the common people through standard and recognized mode of free, fair and impartial elections.

The significant result of this election is massive turnout of voters and gave befitting reply to the threats given by separatist and united Jihad council. Moreover, this event has also given rest to the rumours spread by Hurriyat and other militant organizations, who has recently provoked the general public and conveyed the message to shut down their shutters of their shops running on the names of Jihad and militancy. This is a biggest slap rendered by the people of Kashmir on the face of Hurriyat & allied partners. The militants cannot succeed against the masses of the people determined to promote democracy. Full marks to Kashmiri youth who have fully realized how they have been exploited for two decades in the past.
